Our Mission
The mission of the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church is to offer families a Christ-centered, Biblically based ministry that is educational, evangelical, inspirational and combative of negative and demonic forces in our community.
Theme 2012 "Developing Disciples" (John 1:35-43)
The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter). The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." John 1:35-43
God has given us the privilege of running this leg of the race that began more than a century ago in 1876 when Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church began as the first Negro Baptist Church in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Click to learn more about our history.
Enon continues to be a place where people encounter God. Through the ministry at our East location, on Cheltenham Avenue in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, we are committed to developing effective strategies to deter youth violence and to positively impact our local, national, and international community. Enon-East is really a big back yard for the community to come and play and for youth to engage in competitive athletics. Enon-East also includes classrooms, a computer lab, a Family Life Center for programs and activities, and a 5,000 seat sanctuary that allows us to significantly expand our evangelistic efforts. Enon-West, located on Coulter Street in Germantown, is a space for community development activities including a year-round day care which is part of our effort to provide children with positive activities in a Christian context.
And the people of Enon continue to give their time and at least ten percent of the church's revenue to organizations already working to meet critical needs. These efforts have ranged from providing food for orphaned children in Uganda and supporting drug and alcohol recovery programs in South Africa to helping children and adults here in Philadelphia struggling with sickle cell disease, arthritis, and HIV/AIDS. Our work has celebrated our community's elderly and has helped to preserve the best of African-American art, history and music. And whether we're feeding homeless persons, painting a school in disrepair, or visiting the incarcerated, our goal is the same: to point people to a loving God. Because we believe that positive change must be undergirded by a transformed life in Christ, we are relentless evangelists. However, our charge is not just to become Christians, but to progressively develop in the faith and become disciples.
This year I am asking the Enon community to get back to basics and to focus on discipleship. We often wonder why some Christians appear to live defeated lives and do not experience God's joy and peace. While God loves all of us, His commitment to us is related to our commitment to Him. My prayer is that you make your relationship with God your highest priority and that you experience Him in a new and deeper way. Click to learn more about discipleship classes.
