Lupus
In 2008, proceeds benefited Lupus. Why? Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body. Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from foreign substances, like bacteria and viruses. With lupus, your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues and creates auto antibodies ("auto" means "self") to attack and destroy healthy tissue. These auto antibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.
This year, our benefit organization is LUPUS Foundation of Southeast (SE) PA. This organization provides health services to patients and their families. In addition, they have a summer camp 'Free To Be Me," a Teen Group, and they provide a broad range of educational services to the community.
Similar to Sickle Cell, Lupus is also a disease of flares and remissions. With good medical care, most people with lupus can lead a full life. The LUPUS Foundation of Southeast PA is the only chapter in Pennsylvania, servicing Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties and the surrounding area.
