Troubleshooting Streaming

Please note, you are responsible for troubleshooting your own computers. Our goals is to provide you with the tools needed to troubleshoot you streaming problem. We hope you find these troubleshooting tips helpful.

If you find that data streaming does not always seem to work the way it should, there are a few things you should know that might help you make it work.

  1. Check the system requirements. (See below the System Requirements) Particularly make sure you have the correct browser type and version. Also, make sure you have the updated version of Flash player.
  2. Make sure you are on a Broadband connection such as T1, Cable, WiFi, or FiOS. Streaming was not designed to work with Dial-up or ISDN Internet connections.
  3. Check your Anti-virus or security software. Sometimes this can interfere with Streaming.
  4. Streaming is usually slowed if you try to stream data while your computer is doing a security scan or update.
  5. Make sure nothing else is running on your computer while streaming. Streaming uses a lot of your computer resources and other Flash applications and programs will compete for the computer's resources and slow down your computer and interfere with the live stream.
If you are experiencing issues while viewing the Live Stream, such as pages not loading, blank screen, hearing audio but no video, the video is choppy/jerky or video freezes, please ensure that you are using a supported operating system and browser.

Supported operating systems:
  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7
  • Mac OS 10.4 or newer
Supported browsers:

Internet Explorer and Firefox and Safari are the browsers we officially support and all are A-grade browsers. For the best experience with these features, we encourage you to use a supported browser.

Why is the video choppy or freezing?

The quality of the video clip you are watching mainly depends on two factors:

(a) the speed of your Internet connection and
(b) your computer performance.

The faster the bit rate of the video clip, the better the quality. However, the speed of your Internet connection will limit which video clip bit rate that you can watch. For example, if you only have a 56kbs dial up connection to the Internet, the highest video clip bit rate that you will be able to watch will be 56kbs or less (most likely less as the majority of dial-up connections only get speeds of 28kbs or less due to phone line issues). If you try to watch a video clip with a bit rate of 300kbs over a dial up connection, the video will not play. Our live and archived video clips stream at 600kbs. For the best viewing experience, we recommend a high speed Internet connection such as DSL or Cable Modem.

It is important to note that even if you have a high-speed (DSL/ Cable Modem/ T1), Internet traffic congestion affects your connection speed and/or video performance. You will get slower or faster speeds at different times depending on peak or off-peak use hours. You may also get slower speeds during the morning and afternoon, but faster speeds late at night when fewer people are online. Also, streaming quality decreases when multiple people share the same Internet connection (e.g. at work or on a home network).

However, your PC may be inhibiting you from taking full advantage of this technology. This page will give you useful tips to troubleshoot your slow/choppy streaming video problems. However, lets begin with the basics to get you started.

There are many reason why streaming is choppy on your computer. Unfortunately, we cannot troubleshoot these problems because each computer may have a different problem. What we try to do here is give you the tools and resources needed to troubleshoot the problem for yourself. For more help, you can do a Google Search on "what causes choppy video streaming". You will find a lot of helpful information there.

Why can I hear the audio but not see the video?

This occurs when the speed of your Internet connection is lower than the bit rate of the video clip you are watching or your computer's performance can be the cause as well.

(a) Internet traffic congestion reduces the speed of your connection below what it should be (for example, you have a high speed DSL or cable modem connection to the Internet, but due to Internet congestion or shared usage, the effective speed of your Internet connection is actually closer to a 56kbs dial up connection).
(b) Also see the above, Why is the video choppy or freezing?

Even though I have all the system requirements, why can't I see or hear any videos?

  1. If you launch the live or on demand streaming on Windows 98 while other audio applications -- including but not limited to mp3 players -- are running, you may have trouble hearing Enon's Streaming sound. If this is the case, close your browser and all audio applications. Restart your browser and go to http://enontab.org

  2. Click here to go to Windows Media and Firewalls for firewall configuration settings if you are connecting to Enon's Streaming from work and are behind a firewall.
